Why This Matters

A Civic Forum Like
No Other

01

Most forums exclude the new generation entirely

Candidates who can answer a child's question honestly and clearly can answer anyone.

02

Children have the power to influence the parents

When a kid comes home fired up about what a candidate said, parents pay attention in a way no mailer or ad can replicate.

03

Practical civic skills for elementary students

Elementary school students research, draft, and deliver questions and gain valuable civic knowledge.

This is not a political event — it's civics education for kids.

Nonpartisan. Equal time for every candidate. Built for the next generation of voters.

Mayor Fred Keeley

Santa Cruz's sitting Mayor and longtime civic leader brings the gavel, the balance, and the gravitas. Mayor Keeley ensures every student question is heard and every candidate gets equal, respectful airtime — keeping this forum civic education, not political theater.

Democracy works best when every voice is at the table — including the youngest ones. During decades in public service, I've learned that the most honest questions often come from those who haven't yet been taught what isn't supposed to be asked. The students of Santa Cruz deserve leaders who will answer them directly, and I'm honored to make sure they do.

— Mayor Fred Keeley, City of Santa Cruz
Event Format

How the
Next Wave
Works

"What are you going to do for us?"

The question every candidate must answer
1
Candidate Introduction & Closing — 2 Minutes Each
Every candidate gets equal time to share their vision for Santa Cruz students — no prepared speeches, no political theater. Just real plans for the kids in this city, in their own words.
2
Live Student Q&A — Moderated by Mayor Fred Keeley
Students ages 8–12 ask the questions, curated by the 3DE Club team from community submissions. Every candidate gets 1–2 minutes to answer each question — same clock, same stage, same rules for all.
3
Nonpartisan & Equal
All declared candidates receive identical time and format. This is civic education — not political theater.
4
Livestreamed on YouTube & Permanently Archived
The entire forum is professionally recorded, livestreamed free to all families worldwide, and archived as a permanent civic record.
